Custom Design

Custom WordPress websites for nonprofits, unions and advocacy organizations

For organizations whose site has to serve several audiences, hold years of reports and posts, or connect to the tools you organize and fundraise with.

Who this is for

A custom project is the right fit if your site has more than 15 pages, several audiences who each need their own path, a membership system, a complex events setup, content in more than one language or CRM integrations that have to work together.

You may have outgrown a site that was built years ago and added to ever since, and nobody is sure what to keep. You may have several departments that each need something different from the site, and someone has to turn that into one plan. Or you want a place you own for your news, reports and member resources, so your message doesn't depend on social platforms.

If you're not sure you need custom, Growing Roots is built in one week for $5,000.

What you get

A site planned around your audiences. My background is in narrative communications as well as WordPress, so I start with who each page is talking to and the one job it needs to do. A member, a funder and a policymaker each get a clear path to what they came for.

A site your team can run. You get three recorded training sessions, a written guide for your site that explains each task and why it's set up that way, and ready-made page and section patterns in your site's design. To build a new campaign page, your team inserts a pattern and changes the words and photos.

Forms and tools that are connected and tested. Your CRM, donation forms, action tools and email signups are connected to the site, and I test every form before launch.

Accessibility checked throughout. I build to WCAG 2.2 AA standards and check accessibility at several points, from your brand colors and contrast to heading order, keyboard navigation, animation that stops on its own and Spanish text marked so screen readers pronounce it correctly. Third-party forms and widgets run on their own code, so I'll tell you where they fall short and what I can adjust.

Built to be found. Every page gets a search title and description, old addresses are redirected so your rankings carry over, and the site is structured so search engines and AI tools can read it.

What custom projects cost

Book your free intro call

Custom projects start at $15,000, and most land between $15,000 and $35,000. The price depends on the number of pages, the integrations and how much of the strategy and copy you want me to do. If your team plans the sitemap or writes the copy, the price comes down.

We talk through scope and timeline on your intro call, and I send you a proposal after that.

Most projects take four to six months. Quick feedback gets you closer to four.

How a custom project works

1. I learn how your organization works

We start with an onboarding session on your goals, your audiences and how your organization is set up. I go through your current site and your analytics, talk with your team, and sort your existing content by traffic so you can decide what to keep. Anything you retire gets redirected, so your old links keep working.

2. We plan the pages before I design anything

I map out the sitemap, who each page is talking to and what it needs to do. Then I show you creative direction options, so your team agrees on the look before I design the full site. Every decision you'll need to make is laid out up front, so you have time to think it through.

3. You see the site as it comes together

You review the homepage first, then the full site. Feedback goes in one place, in one batch, which keeps it manageable when several people are weighing in. You approve each stage before I move on.

4. Your site goes live and your team is trained

I launch the site and train your team on it in three sessions. You get documentation, a video library and 30 or 60 days of support after launch, depending on the size of the build. You own all of it.

What it's like to work together

They should be the go-to choice for local organizations looking to improve how they visually communicate their mission and impact on the community. Unlike other marketing and design agencies, working with Rooted Impact didn’t feel mechanical or impersonal. It truly felt like they cared about our mission as much as we did, and we never felt like just another client in a standard process. The technical expertise and visual design skills exceeded our expectations. If you want to work with a team that is responsive, takes feedback well, and genuinely has your best interests at heart, Rooted Impact is the way to go.

Caitlin at Rooted Impact is a website wizard! She took our broad vision for a website and brought it to life beyond what we thought was possible. When we look at the website, it feels like a mirror has been held up to our grassroots organizing. Our audiences are left with an authentic impression of who we are. Further, Caitlin made the process simple from start to finish.

Rooted Impact took our ancient website and replaced it with a beautiful new website that has improved functionality and design. They kept us organized as we overhauled our entire public image, and made sure that we understood all the new capabilities our website now has. Now, we have a stunning new website that projects quality and professionalism.

It was wonderful working with Caitlin to redesign the website for my consulting business website. My site had been languishing in mediocrity for a few years, and I was embarrassed to share it with clients. But Caitlin breathed new life into it and turned it into something that presented me and my work beautifully and professionally. I was impressed with how much she was able to do despite the fact that I only had a few vague ideas to give her about what I had in mind. She was easy to work with, timely, responsive, and she set me up very well to manage the site after it was done.

"From initial consult through to website launch and handover, I felt truly heard as a small business owner and the unique challenges that we face when making decisions about brand positioning and about what to scale, when. Caitlin helped us navigate our website buildout with a keen understanding of digital strategy, marketing and brand strategy, and balancing longer term vision with short term needs. Caitlin holds space for learning in a way that feels very empowering and made me feel confident about taking the reigns once the website was launched. Caitlin has a knack for taking your ideas and turning them into a visual, storytelling delight that is a true joy to experience both from the owner perspective as well as the end user customer / client perspective. 10/10 recommend. Thank you, Rooted Impact!"

Working with Caitlin has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business. From the start, she understood my vision and brought it to life in a way that not only looks beautiful but has also given my business the edge it needed. I get so many compliments on the website and it has helped me book more events and even secure a location in a mall. Something I never imagined happening this soon! Her attention to detail, responsiveness, and willingness to go the extra mile (like creating video tutorials for me) truly sets her work apart. I’m beyond grateful for her expertise and highly recommend to anyone looking for a website that’s both stunning and functional.
